Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
